Star Wars Wedding – May The Fourth Be With You

star wars wedding

On May the 4th (be with you) last year, I shot Andy and Victoria’s Star Wars wedding. I love it when my couples really inject themselves into their day and this was certainly true for these guys. Victoria is a very talented seamstress and handmade the wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses. The couple also handmade the reception decor bits and pieces to add to their theme. It was a really fabulous day with lots of laughter. Here is Victoria to talk you through their wedding supplier choices.

Your venue: The Uffculme Centre, Birmingham. When we visited Uffculme, we fell in love with it immediately. It’s a beautiful Grade II listed building, and we loved the features of the room we were holding the reception in. It has a huge window which let in lots of natural light. The ceremony itself was in a glass conservatory and the view of the building from outside was just stunning.

Outfits: The bridal party consisted of just myself and my two daughters who were 5 and 7 at the time. As the theme for the day was Star Wars (and my girls don’t like pretty dresses), I made them dresses to look like R2-D2 and BB-8.

I also made my dress myself too. It was a 50s style dress with a corset back, and a detachable train. I added some embroidery to the inside of the train and also hid some R2-D2 ribbon on the inside of the bodice. My shoes were dyed to be the exact colour of R2-D2 as well and were from John Lewis.

Rings: My ring was from Ernest Jones and is a rose gold half eternity band. It had to be repaired two weeks after the wedding as a diamond fell out. It’s been repaired twice now and waiting to be repaired a third time. Buying this ring is the thing we regret the most.

Cake: Our cake was made by Yvonne of Kake and Cupkakery, who we met because she was the venue’s caterer. She was more than up for making a vegan wedding cake (and an entirely vegan wedding menu) and it was fantastic. We chose a naked cake, just because we liked the simplicity of it. The lemon flavour was chosen because our daughters love lemon drizzle cake! Andy copied the cake topper from something I’d seen on Pinterest and sent it to someone to be cut out of plastic.

Flowers: My flowers were one of my favourite things! I bought faux flowers from Hobbycraft for myself and my daughters. My flowers went inside a replica of Darth Vader’s lightsaber!

Photographer: We chose Laura as our photographer because I wanted a female photographer and someone who wouldn’t do too many forced poses. We feel incredibly uncomfortable having our photos taken, so it was important to find someone who would take more candid shots throughout the day.

Evening entertainment: We booked The Decades Band for the evening entertainment. Neither of us was keen on having a DJ and, honestly, I wanted total control over the music! We’d seen our band perform the year before and really liked them. They played a lot of the indie music we like. The rest of the music was a playlist on my iPod playing through the band’s sound system.

Venue Decor: The venue provided the tablecloths and chair covers and we did the rest ourselves. I bought navy blue organza table runners and chair bows from eBay. Each table was named after a Star Wars planet, and so each one had a picture. Andy made our centrepieces himself; they’re all large terrariums with Star Wars figures inside which have lights controlled remotely. Our confetti was from Shropshire Petals and I used some of it to scatter on the tables.

Any other suppliers: We have to give a shout out to The UK Garrison, who provided us with Darth Vader to walk me down the aisle and three Stormtroopers. They were the highlight of the day and something we’ll never forget!

A couple of planning questions:

  1. When you were planning, what were the most important things that you wanted for your wedding?

We decided on a Star Wars theme within a week of getting engaged, so it was important for us to get 4th May as the date! It was important for us to have a vegan wedding and also a fairly informal one.

Once we found the Uffculme Centre and knew they could do our date, cater for vegans and provide an afternoon tea instead of a three-course meal, everything else fell into place.

  1. Is there anything that you wished you had done differently?

Aside from buying a different wedding ring, I don’t think that there is. We had such a wonderful day and it was exactly what we both wanted.

  1. Can you offer any advice to couples in the planning process?

Just relax and enjoy it. I think wedding planning is as stressful as you want to make it. Remember, it’s your day and not anyone else’s, so do what makes you both happy.
